You’ve tried but you still don’t have the financial security you desire?

Dear Woman Friend:

A few years ago, I told a male colleague who gave business presentations that I taught a course on women and their finances.  He said, “Oh, I see, that’s just a marketing gimmick, right?  Because finances are finances and money is money.”

“WRONG,” I said to myself. Instead I replied, “It is not the finances that are different, or the techniques to acquire them.  It’s the women, who we are, how we think, how we learn, where our comfort zone is in having ambition and creating wealth.

Quite clearly, he did not understand, but I’ll bet you do. Women have many things in common and share many things culturally.  In some respects, we have aspects of our lives that are invisible to men, I think primarily because the men in our lives are not as interested in those aspects of our lives.

Most financial courses assume that women will learn and assimilate information the same way men do. Not true.  In my 33 years of law practice dealing with the assets and finances of both men and women clients, I have witnessed a huge difference in the approach and understanding of men and women.  And not only that, but some women are totally bored with learning about finances, especially when it involves math.

My response is that women may not like math, but they love to have money!  So maybe teaching a little bit of financial math and money concepts would be okay if presented so that women could easily learn them.  I have tried it over and over for years with my women clients and it has been an IMMENSE SUCCESS.  Believe me, it works.

Why?  I think there are many reasons, but women in mixed groups don’t generally ask questions because they assume their questions are “dumb questions” and everyone else knows the answer.  Or sometimes women don’t want to “disempower” the men in her life.

We are not lazy thinkers or dumb.  No ma’am.  Once a woman realizes that she can have fun learning how to grow a “wealth garden,” her response is magical.  She realizes she can climb huge mountains and achieve real wealth.  What might have been lack of information, or boredom or apathy or even not wanting to threaten the man in her life is replaced by the joy of watching things grow—very much like a garden.  It’s especially true for those women with children and grandchildren who will be proud of her and eventually be the objects of her generous bounty.  Beyond that, you have the opportunity to be a wonderful role model for all the younger generations of women in your family.

As women, we rarely stop playing the woman’s role in life—after all we are women!  We put children first, spouses first, extended family may have needs, and often our own financial, emotional or spiritual needs are only met after we take care of all these other things.

My Pink Money classes address all of that.  CAUTION: TAKING THESE CLASSES COULD MAKE YOU GO FROM DANGEROUSLY BROKE TO DELIGHTFULLY WEALTHY!

One of the things we cover in the second session is that a little bit of math is your friend when it comes to making money. It’s funny how much more palatable math is when the end result is a fuller pocketbook. “We $mile”
